Layers and Blend Mode
January 5, 2001
The first method we'll look at is a simple copy/paste that makes
use of the blend modes to create the effect. (Note, this method
doesn't work particularly well with very dark colors). Start by
opening a new canvas and immediately create a new layer.
Create your text in any fashion you like, adding it to the layer, not
the background. You can use a solid color, texture, or gradient fill.
As soon as the text appears on the canvas press CTRL + C followed by
CTRL + L on your keyboard. This copies the text and pastes it as a
new layer on the canvas.
Working on this new layer, switch to the Mover tool. Position the
pasted text directly over top of the original text. Once it's lined
up perfectly, slide the text a couple of pixels to the right or
left of the original text. If you still have the moving marquee
selection showing on your canvas you can de-select to get rid of it.
Doesn't look like much right now, does it. The trick is in the
blend modes. Open you Layer Palette and locate the layer that
contains the pasted text. (Hint: If you've followed along with
this example, it will be layer 3.) The Blend modes are located
on the right of the layer palette, with each layer having it's
own control. Change the blend mode for layer 3 to Screen. Once
you see the effect feel free to play around with the various blend
modes. Each will produce a different result. Some will produce
a 3D effect, some will not.
Add a drop shadow to finish of your image, and there you have it...
nearly instant 3D text!
Instant 3D Text
Of course, if you'd prefer instant 3D, PSP 7 can do that too.
Several built-in filters and effects will turn flat text into
3D with the click of a button.

built-in effects; Sculpture, Hotwax and Inner Bevel. The addition
of a dropshadow to the finished image enhances the 3-D effect.
