For the Sculpture effect you can work on the canvas background or
a layer.
Add your text, then without de-selecting the text
add the Sculpture effect;
[Effects > Texture > Sculpture].
Select 3-D from the drop down menu or play around creating
a custom effect by changing the Pattern, Image, and Light settings.
Some interesting effects can be obtained by using the 3-D setting
and then changing the pattern; try a rock or granite pattern.
You may notice at this point that if you try to add a drop shadow
to the image you won't get quite the desired effect; there will be a
jagged edge showing between the image and it's shadow. To eliminate
this simply modify the selection like so:
[Selections > Modify > Contract]
contract selection by 1 pixel
Click OK
Now add that drop shadow!
If you prefer a weathered carved effect, something that might
be popular for a cemetery or genealogy site, Sculpture is still
the tool for you. The difference between this method and the
last is the text is
deselected before applying the effect, and you'll need to make a few
adjustments to the controllers in the Sculpture dialog box.
To create the carved stone effect start as before by adding text
to the canvas. Select
[Effects > Texture > Sculpture] from
the menu bar. Once you're in the dialog box first select the
3-D pre-set from the drop down menu, then make the following
changes to the settings:
black text
sculpture - 3D
adjust
smoothness 10
depth 3
pattern granite
Some interesting effects can be produced by combining different
effects. Starting at the top, the first image is flat text; the
same image was used to create the following 4 images.
The second image has only the Sculpture 3D pre-set applied.
A cutout was applied to this image prior to adding the Sculpture
3D pre-set.
This image had 50% noise added, and then the same pre-set as the
others.
Finally, this example had the Topography effect applied, and then
the pre-set. The Topography effect creates it's own three dimensional
look by making the image appear to be created from a system of terraces.
Play around with the various filters and effects, combining two or
more. There's no telling what you might come up with... maybe your
own personal master-piece. :)
