SMIL: Multimedia for Everyone (Philipp Hoschka)
May 24, 1999
SMIL (Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language)
has been covered by several
articles by WDVL's Jeff Rule.
SMIL lets you:
split scenes into components (video, text, audio, image)
synchronize components: <par><video/><text/></par>
sequence components: <seq><audio src="a"/><audio src="b"/></seq>
control looping and other timing attributes
switch (e.g., choosing between different bit rates of the client)
regular or temporal hyperlinks (can specify how long a link is available)
define layout in the <head> element
Phillipp listed 5 SMIL players and
several authoring tools :
Integration with other languages like SVG and HTML is possible. In the future, there will
be DOM support, transitions, animation, priority,
and atemporal control for increased interactivity.
For details, see the slides from the
talk by Philipp Hoschka .
See also the SMIL spec
and the W3C Audio/Video page.
(If you have RealPlayer G2 or another SMIL player, check out a very
cool demo called What I Did Last Summer .)
