While most developers are familiar with the use of an FTP client, we've all faced situations where we need to edit our site but just don't have access to the software we need. Mainstay has come up with a way to solve that problem with their JustEdit familiy of products.
|
Okay, different scenario...you're going to be out of the
office for a week on vacation, and you need somebody to
update the intro paragraph, along with the daily sale item
on the company web site. The only person that's available
to do it doesn't know a thing about HTML, let alone the
programs you usually use to edit the site. Enter JustEdit
Pro. Like JustEdit, JustEdit Pro uses a simple web browser
interface, and it can be used anywhere you have access to
an internet connection and a web browser. But while JustEdit
requires the user to be at least comfortable working directly
in HTML code, JustEdit Pro take the complexity completely
out of the editing process. Users can only edit specific
sections of pages, and it's as easy as filling out a simple
form.
With JustEdit Pro you have the option of editing the whole
page, as with JustEdit, but you also have two additional
options:
- Field edit - this enables the user to edit small
pre-selected areas of your site using a simple form
- Paragraph Edit - this enables the user to edit complete
paragraphs
Setting up JustEditPro isn't a super quick task, that is
unless you're only setting up one or two fields to be edited.
You must use the basic editing feature of JustEdit Pro and
edit the page, select the area to become the
"field," and click the Add button. This lets
you select the name for the field, and the default value.
Once this task is done, however, it's a simple matter of
changing the parameters of the applet on the login page.
While you can place more than one editing applet on the
login page, you can only edit one specific page per applet
without changing the parameters again. In the end, although
the setup is tedious, once it is done, the person using
JustEdit Pro is shielded from that process, and only sees
and uses the simple form interface.

Mainstay also recently debutted
OmniEdit.com,
a web site which provides a free service that lets users
edit their web pages anytime, anywhere, from a web browser
interface. To use the OmniEdit service, a user visits the
OmniEdit.com web site, enters their FTP name, password, and
path for any of their own pages. A text editor window then
opens, displaying the HTML code to be edited. After making
any changes, the user just clicks the "Save" button and the
page is updated. OmniEdit's security is consistant with the
security of a user's current FTP client, and is more like a
transparent FTP client embedded in a Web page. Like
traditional FTP clients, a name and a password are required
for read/write access to Web pages, and no details are stored
either on the browser or on the OmniEdit Web site.
If I had any suggestions for Mainstay to make the JustEdit
products better, it would be to create the option of using
a non-Java interface for setting up the fields and paragraphs
on pages. Then once they have been edited, they can be sent
up to the server using normal methods. This would speed up
the initial process, and take the tedious part out of the
task.
There you have it! Mainstay has created a tool that can save
your professional life, stop you from having a crisis, and
enable both the web developer or the non-developer to edit
web pages using a standard web browser! Can't beat that.
