Source Code Library 2000

June 20, 2001

While building a Web site recently, I needed a script written. My first thought was to send it to the scripting department. My second thought was that my "scripting department" was in 11th and 12th grade English classes at the local high school — probably asleep.

Source Code Library Window A quick dive into the surf of the Internet turned up a great solution: Source Code Library 2000. This is a program with more than 200 source code samples, a file creator, and wizards for meta tags, colors, fonts, and sounds. And, unlike my scripting department (aka teenage sons), it didn't cost me a dime for services or hit me up for gas money.

SCL 2000 is a program that provides quite usable samples of Active X Controls, Dynamic HTML, frames and tables, HTML and cascading stylesheets, JavaScript, VBScript, windows controls, and scripts exclusive to Internet Explorer 5. If you find a script somewhere else or write one of your own, it can be saved into the program for later use.

File Creator The program features two "main" screens: the Code Browser (above) and the File Creator (left). The selected code sample appears in the Code Browser. A click on the arrow in the menu bar starts the external browser, allowing users to see the program in action before deciding whether or not to use it.

The program's Auto Clip Board, Quick Page Creator, Single File Viewer, and Example Copier enable the user to copy the example code into a folder. From there, the user can open the file, tweak it to a particular need or appearance, then run the new code using the File Creator module or on an HTML page.

Those things are all nice, but SCL 2000 offers much, much more:

Meta Wizard

  • Meta Wizard: This simple fill-in-the-blank form makes the creation of meta tags a snap, and includes some items that lesser experienced users may not have known or thought about. In addition to the usual keywords and description information, it prompts the user for refresh time and target, expiration date, creator information, robot directions, contributors, and relative links. Once that is done the user can copy to the clipboard for insertion into an HTML file or send it directly to File Creator.
  • Color Wizard: This allows users to see the name and hex code for the colors as well as a small preview window to see what the color really looks like. Color Wizard By merely choosing a button, the user can insert hex or decimal code or color name into a document or send it to the clipboard.
  • Font Wizard: This enables the user to choose the font, its color (including color coding) and then insert a font tag or basefont tag into a document or send it to the clipboard.
  • Sound Wizard: Sound files can be selected to use either as a background sound or an embedded sound. It works with both Netscape and IE by creating JavaScript code that can be used in either browser. It also enables users to choose a media player on their computer and then listen to the files without leaving the program.

The program, created by Gary Warren and Warren Webdesign, does not have to be registered, but registration will allow the company to notify you if an upgrade is available.

What is it called again? Source Code Library 2000 (SCL 2000).
Where can I get it? http://web.ukonline.co.uk/warren.webdesign/index.html
How much does it cost? Nothing
How big is the download? 729 KB
Do I recommend it? Yes I do. It's a great little program for dealing with those nasty little things that usually take a lot of time.
