Review: Scribbler 2000

April 19, 2000

With my peak learning years now decades past, it is often important that I find ways of doing things other than the hard way. It was such a requirement that led me to a program called Scribbler 2000.

As a web builder who prefers having pages load in the browser within a day, I began looking at javascript as an alternative for Java. The problem was that I didn't have time -- nor the desire -- to learn the language. After all, that's what the "View" and "Source" buttons are for, right?

Scribbler 2000 is an editing program by Cream Software that allows for the simpler creation, preview, and alteration of javascript, DHTML, and VB scripts. That versatility enables the program to be useful for experts and neophytes — particularly at a price of $35.

The best feature in my mind is that it easily allows me to save javascript found other places for later, repeated use. No more stashing scripts throughout the hard drive and then a few weeks later not remembering what the script was or why I kept it (another ability lost in my march toward maturity).

The newest version of Scribbler 2000 — version 1.9.2 — comes with 64 scripts installed, many basic to the needs of most people. See a script name in the left window, double click on it, and it is demonstrated for you in the right window.

If it does about what you want but needs some changes, you can do that by opening the script, which reveals the code in the right window. Make your changes and then either copy it to the clipboard for immediate, one-time use, or save it for later use.

Most all of the included scripts are cross-browser types whose functions range from utility to navigation to ornamental.

For those who have learned how to create scripts, it enables them to write the script, test it, save it, rewrite, retest, and make themselves proud in one small program. Features such as syntax highlighting, debugging capabilities, bookmarks, code navigator, code templates, and form builders make the work easier.

The program features sidebars with the standard elements for each of the programming languages. Users can then double click to insert them into their script or simply drag and drop them into their code.

Those sidebars include instructions, objects with their methods, and events in each of the languages.

Another good feature is the ability to set preferences to match your expertise, or lack thereof.

Scribbler 2000 is available in English, German, Portuguese, Czech, and Polish languages.

With more than 100 scripts now stored inside my version of the program, it has become one of my more useful utilities — not to mention the fact that all I have to remember is what the icon looks like.
