The Webmaster's Lexicon: W

W3C World Wide Web Consortium. The group that is steering standards development for the World Wide Web. The W3C exists to realize the full potential of the web. The Consortium is run in the United States by MIT Laboratory for Computer Science and in Europe by INRIA, in collaboration with CERN where the web originated.
WDVL

Web Developer's Virtual Library. The WDVL at http://WDVL.com/ is a major award-winning web developer's encyclopedia, providing both local content, and thousands of links to further information. It's the surest way to learn about the web and the art and science of web creation.
Web The universe of network-accessible information, an embodiment of human knowledge. It is an initiative started at CERN where the web originated. It has a body of software, and a set of protocols and conventions. WWW uses hypertext and multimedia techniques to make the web easy for anyone to roam, browse, and contribute to.
Webmaster

One whose job it is to manage a web site. Webmasters mediate between web authors and system administrators, ensures that applicable standards such as HTML validity and link liveness are met, optimises the web architecture for navigability, takes editorial responsibility for the content, quality and style of the site; finds, creates and installs tools to create web content and check consistency; develops and enforces the house style; liaises with graphic artists; provides first level user support. Note that these are only some of the things Webmasters may be doing - Webmaster responsibilities vary dramatically from site to site.
World Wide Web

A globally interconnected network of hypermedia information comprising: 1.The Internet, + 2.A protocol for transmission of hypermedia documents, + 3.A set of servers that respond to requests from browsers (or clients) for those documents. The World-Wide Web (WWW) is a hypertext-based, distributed information system created by researchers at CERN in Switzerland and France.
